Families of Bahamian War Veterans Attend Annual Wreath Laying Ceremony

NASSAU, BAHAMAS – The British Legion Bahamas held their annual wreath laying ceremony, coming together with families to honor the legacy of fallen Bahamian war heroes. The organization’s chairman Adina Monroe Charlow says it’s a tradition that she’s organized for the last 18 years and one she refuses let fade away.”

The annual laying of the wreaths, more than just a ceremony, but an intricate act of keeping our country’s history alive. Munroe-Charlow explaining the legacy of the poppy worn every November.

“The poppy is one hundred and four years old along with the British Legion as an organization the British Legion was established internationally in 1921 two years after the First World War ended in 1918.”

British High Commissioner to The Bahamas, Smita Rossetti, also in attendance. She shared a personal connection with the families.

“Today has been deeply moving to be able to be here with the families remembering their fathers their grandfathers it really is for me just a beautiful moment to be part of and to be able to support.”

The late veteran Comrade John McPhee’s grave adorned with a wreath by his widow, Nellie McPhee. While recalling fond memories she has of her husband, she also admits that it’s still difficult for her to visit the cemetery.

“He was such a beautiful husband he use to do everything for me everything it’s nothing I ask him to do he wouldn’t do and that’s what I thank God for about him.”
