NASSAU, BAHAMAS – Two taxi cab drivers are in police custody after a heated protest this morning staged by taxi cab drivers who work at the Nassau Cruise Port. President of the Bahamas Taxi Cab Union, Tyrone Butler, says the incident was sparked over a number of concerns.

Despite extended hours, Butler says drivers are still not making enough money. Another concern, he adds, is that the public restroom available to drivers remains locked before 4 a.m.

Butler says they’ve had numerous discussions on these matters on various occasions but to no avail. However, he admits that their fight is not with the cruise port, but rather with the government, which he believes is failing them.

He also takes issue with what he describes as the aggressive treatment of drivers by officers. Still, he says the union plans to continue its fight and stand firmly with its members.

As for the two cab drivers who were arrested, Butler says he cannot confirm if any charges were pressed. Since the protest this morning, he says he has not heard back from officials at the cruise port or the government.
