NEMA Stands Ready To Respond

NASSAU, BAHAMAS – The National Emergency Management Agency, the entity responsible for the country’s disaster management response, continuing to play a significant role in the protection of lives especially during hurricane season. Tonight, our Jameelha Missick tells us that NEMA’s director says all relevant agencies remain engaged and ready to respond in the event of a major storm.

Just two months into the Atlantic hurricane season and so far, no major threat to the islands. However, this does not mean residents should let their guards down. That, according to Director of the National Emergency Management Agency, Captain Stephen Russell, who says NEMA continues to plan and prepare year-round.

Now, it is projected to be an above average hurricane season. And, Russell says as it relates to preparations NEMA is comfortable from a national standpoint. Not only in New Providence, but all relevant agencies in the Family Islands as well.

In recent weeks, New Providence experienced a record number of rain fall, an area of concern into the hurricane season. Capt. Russell says this calls for partners to ensure that drainage systems are cleared on a timely basis.
