$130M Investment Made Into Grand Bahama International Airport

The Prime Minister says despite what seems like slow progress, that they’re working for the residents of the nation’s second city.

Our Joshua Williams was in Grand Bahama and joined us live.

A deal for the Grand Bahama International Airport has been signed, according to Prime Minister Philip Davis at the Grand Bahama Business Outlook on Thursday morning.

This came amid uncertainty from Grand Bahamians that the airport, destroyed by Hurricane Dorian back in 2019, would ever be rebuilt.

While this deal was announced during a recent cabinet meeting on the island, Davis provided these details,

“Phase one of the new Grand Bahama International Airport, around 130 million dollars of investment, will deliver a modern terminal with U.S. pre-clearance, expanded apron space, stronger flood protection and improved road access. The government has now signed a contract with Manchester airport’s group, and mag’s work began in January. “

Then there’s the Grand Lucayan that the government signed an agreement to sell the hotel and the adjacent reef golf course to U.S.-based developer Concord Wilshire capital for a reported $120 million dollars in May of last year.

The deal includes plans for an $827M redevelopment of the 56-acre beachfront property into a mixed-use resort and cruise destination. However, so far there’s been little movement, with reports of layoffs and staff going home without salaries.

Along with changes to the energy sector, Davis says these changes and new developments will bring about the relief that Grand Bahamians have longed for, for years.
