TUC Leader Threatens Legal Action After Resort Layoffs

NASSAU, BAHAMAS – Just days after hundreds of workers lost their jobs, the head of the Trade Union Congress, Obie Ferguson, says he is suing, after reports claimed he reached an agreement with government on payouts.

“ I heard all over every radio station, indicated that I had a meeting with them and we came to an agreement with respect to the workers at the [Grand Lucayan Resort]. That is irresponsible, [it] is an outright lie. I’m filing a writ for defamation of character and liable.”

The fall-out continues over redundancy payments at the Grand Lucayan Resort, as Trade Union Congress President Obie Ferguson says he is taking legal action, after reports he met with labour officials and reached an agreement on payout terms for displaced workers.

Ferguson tells Our News that never happened.

On Friday, Director of Investments in the Office of The Prime Minister, Phylicia Woods-Hanna, said government completed a targeted redundancy exercise at the resort, adding that workers were paid in accordance with the law.

However, Ferguson says those statements have left many former employees confused, and distressed.

Ferguson also says the TUC submitted its own proposal months ago, and claims communication since then has been limited.
