“We’re No Further Ahead, We’re No Further Back, We’re Just Status Quo”

NASSAU , BAHAMAS – While both the government and Grand Bahama Port Authority claimed victory in their recent arbitration case, the Grand Bahama Chamber of Commerce believes it all was for naught.

This is leaving the city of Freeport in the same predicament it was in for the past 50 years.

Grand Bahama Chamber of Commerce president, Dillon Knowles, described the recent tribunal as an “interesting event,” adding that neither party fully met their claims.

Instead, both sides agreed to additional actions that need to be taken.

Knowles said that he believes the arbitration still left a grey area.

He explained that the government still has the final say on Freeport as it has for the last 50 years, while the GBPA still has to negotiate with the government as it always has.

He added that the chamber continues to call on both parties to work together for the good of Freeport.

As for what he thought the best outcome would have been? One, not before the tribunal.

Requiring both to collaborate on a new regulatory and administrative regime.
