GRAND BAHAMA , BAHAMAS – While record-breaking tourism numbers remain the talk of the day, a recently formed committee has found that those numbers aren’t exactly trickling throughout the island of Grand Bahama as anticipated.

That’s owner of Pirate’s Cove Zipline and Water Park and member of the Grand Bahama Island Promotion Board, David Wallace, said that in November of last year following the opening of Celebration Cay, the chairman of the GBI promotion’s board called for the formation of a committee to look into the impact the cay would have on the tourism sector and the island’s economy.

Those findings showed that numbers were in fact decreasing across tour operators on the islands.

Recommendations were made to the former chamber president, Port Authority and government through the tourism minister and Grand Bahama minister.

Wallace said Deputy Prime Minister, Chester Cooper shared that government was in the process of hiring ambassadors to help promote island-wide tours.

Another committee recommendation was to have government partner with cay officials to organize and pay for daily tours that would move tourists throughout the island.

He said the goal is to have at least 500 tourists, out of the thousands of visitors, explore beyond the cay.

Despite the current challenges, Wallace remains optimistic.
