Charlton Wins Third Straight Title, Ties World Record

POLAND – Devynne Charlton officially entered the history books, and she did it once again in world record fashion.

Charlton won an unprecedented third consecutive World Athletics Indoor Championship title in the women’s 60-meter hurdles, matching her own world record of 7.65 seconds in the final.

Dominant from start to finish, she ran 7.74 seconds in the semifinals, then a world-leading time, before delivering a flawless race when it mattered most.

Charlton’s indoor championships resume is unmatched. In 2022, she won silver in Serbia, broke through with gold and a world record in 2024 in Glasgow, added another gold last year in Nanjing, and now cemented legendary status.

World Athletics Indoor Championships

Charlton was the highlight, but Team Bahamas also had other strong performances in Poland.

The Bahamas placed two Olympians in the women’s 60-meter hurdles final. Denisha Cartwright finished seventh in a season’s best 7.90 seconds.

Charisma Taylor just missed a spot in the final by hundredths of a second but clocked a personal best 7.91 seconds in the semifinals.

Taylor doubled back in the field and finished 14th in the triple jump at 13.11 meters.

In the men’s heptathlon, Kendrick Thompson finished 10th with 5,776 points, and Tajh Brown was out in the heats of the 60-meter hurdles in 8.30 seconds.

Track and Field

Following the BAAAs CARIFTA trials, Team Bahamas continues to build momentum heading into CARIFTA 53.

New qualifiers also made a statement at trials. Ethan North qualified in the under-20 boys javelin, and in the under-17 boys division, Zion Bradford secured the 200-meter/400-meter double and became the first 400-meter qualifier in the process.

Among returning medalists in the under-17 division, Jazae Johnson stood out with three wins in the 100 meters, long jump and triple jump, while Keyezra Thomas doubled in the 200 meters and 400 meters.

Justin Shephard won the under-17 boys octathlon in a tight battle, Ashley Demeritte finished second, and last year’s CARIFTA bronze medalist Kamron Henfield was left on the outside looking in.

There were 59 pre-qualifiers headed into trials.

Tennis

Recently ousted Bahamas Lawn Tennis Association executives are pushing back against what they called an unauthorized meeting.

In a statement, they claimed that a recent gathering called an Extraordinary General Meeting was not properly convened and that any decisions made carry no legal or constitutional weight.

At that meeting, the former board led by President Perry Newton was dissolved, and a new one was elected, led by Marvin Rolle.

The association also raised concerns about unlawful access to the National Tennis Centre and noted that the matter remains before the courts.
