Our News Helps to Make Reading Fun at Claridge Primary

NASSAU, BAHAMAS – Getting kids to develop a love for reading can be pretty challenging, especially nowadays, where technology is so reliant on videos, motion graphics and the like.

A teacher over at Claridge Primary School has found a unique and fun way to do it by utilizing guest readers.

Well on Monday, Jerome Sawyer was invited into the classroom.

For these first graders at Claridge Primary School, it’s an opportunity to experience reading in a much more fun and exciting way.

On Monday, Jerome spent the afternoon reading the story of “The Greedy Python”, an adventure he enjoyed just as much as they did.

Although it was hard to tell at times who was leading the kids, Jerome was able to get the message across.

It’s the kind of interaction first grade teacher, Darisha Johnson encourages from guest readers, who come every two weeks, as her way to try and develop a love for reading.

“It is exposing the students to let them know that everyone reads, not just them. It is also even if you can’t read with someone reading to you, so you can develop a love for reading and eventually you would have an interest in you, a love for reading yourself.”

All week long, someone from the Our News family will be in the readers’ chair.

“I was coming down to the end of the year, and I am like geez, who am I going to get? Every two weeks is a lot. So I said, let me reach out to Jerome on Facebook and see if he would respond. I sent it to three people at the same time. You were the only one who responded to me.”
