NASSAU , BAHAMAS – The race for Golden Isles was thrust into motion last year after the sudden passing of former MP and Environment Minister Vaughn Miller on September 28.

His death created a vacancy in one of New Providence’s key constituencies, setting the stage for an emotional and closely watched by-election.

Four candidates entered the race.

The Progressive Liberal Party’s candidate was former senator Darron Pickstock.

The Free National Movement nominated Brian Brown.

The Coalition of Independents put forward Brian Rolle.

The independent candidate Karen Butler asked residents to support a fresh approach.

When the votes were counted on November 24, Pickstock emerged victorious, winning more than 1,800 votes and holding the seat for the PLP.

The result also exposed a bigger issue. Voter turnout stood at just 49 percent, well below the 65 percent recorded during the 2021 general election.

Following his win, Pickstock said he understood the work was only beginning.

“I run on my record, you know, I’m my own man, and the people have put their trust in me, but I understand that trust has to be earned. Trust is earned through consistency, through action, and through doing what you say you will do. So I understand that I’m earning trust.”

Despite the loss, FNM candidate Brian Brown vowed to remain present in the community.

“It looked well today, and Mr. Brown will be here tomorrow. The office will be open and ready to go.”

Coalition of Independents candidate Brian Rolle also said his movement would continue pushing for change.

“To keep on fighting. We still have a country. There are still a number of issues that we are facing. The Coalition of Independents is driven. We want to fix this country, we have a passion for this, and we will get it done. We just need the public to give us an opportunity.”

Independent Karen Butler said she would reflect on her campaign and what comes next.

Now, we’ll see which of these candidates will ultimately win the constituency come May 12, on election day.
