Jones Dominates in Commissioner’s Cup Opener

UNITED STATES – Jonquel Jones delivered her best performance of the season on Wednesday night, powering the New York Liberty to a 97-82 win over the Toronto Tempo.

The Bahamian All-Star finished with a season-high 22 points and a season-high 17 rebounds as the Liberty improved to 6-4 on the year.

Jones dominated from the opening tip, recording 17 points and 12 rebounds in the first half alone, helping New York overcome an early deficit before pulling away in the second half.

The victory was the Liberty’s third straight, continuing a recent surge after a slow start to the season.

Next up for New York is a highly anticipated home matchup against Caitlin Clark and the Indiana Fever on Saturday night at Barclays Center.

Minoges Softball

The University of The Bahamas will make history on Saturday when it hosts its first-ever High School Girls Softball Prospect Evaluation at Banker’s Field.

Hosted Saturday at 9 a.m., Mingoes coach Yvana McDonald will evaluate 35 Grade 11 and 12 players from schools across the country.

The prospect camp is part of UB’s continuing effort to rebuild its women’s softball program.

Baseball

Bahamas baseball is on the rise internationally, and the local governing body is looking forward to even more success this weekend from a talented 14U group at the PONY Baseball Caribbean and Latin American Zone Championships.

Bahamas Baseball Federation President Clarence McKenzie cited the country’s recent second-place finishes at the Senior Caribbean Cup and the Under-15 Caribbean Cup as signs of things to come.

Expectations for this particular squad are even higher. The core group returns after its performance last year at the 12U Championships, where it placed third.
