NASSAU , BAHAMAS – Long before someone becomes a leader, someone has to recognize the potential- once that potential is identified, the real work begins.

For Stacy Johnson, Director of Financial Planning and Analysis and Data Governance, leadership has never been about being the loudest voice in the room.

It’s about making an impact that lasts.

“My goal in leadership is to be an impactful leader. I want to make changes, long-lasting changes, and inspiring others to know that you don’t have to be someone else. If you have a quiet nature, you can be that leader, leading with purpose and leading with clarity.”

Johnson is one of a carefully selected group of employees who, since December, have been enrolled in a year-long leadership development program.

Her perspective reflects one approach to leadership.

But building strong leaders isn’t about finding people who all think the same.

According to Vice President of Human Resources Keshala Knowles, it’s about recognizing potential in different people with different experiences.

“We have persons from the Family Islands. We have persons at different levels within the organization, different functional areas, and that is how you identify talent, not by title, but by what that person possesses. We have so much talent here at Cable Bahamas. It’s not just about today. It’s about the next 30 years.”

It’s a philosophy shared by international leadership consultant Ernesto Uscher, whose work helping organizations build future-ready leaders has brought him to Cable Bahamas.

He says leadership is no longer something organizations can afford to develop only when the need arises.

Around the world, organizations are asking the same question: Just how do you prepare leaders for challenges that don’t exist yet?

It’s a question international leadership consultant Ernesto Uscher has spent years helping companies answer.

“Managing is not enough. Developing leaders is not enough. Creating leadership as a capability in an organization is going to be the most important thing that we see.”

Those conversations are already changing how participants think about leadership.

For Javier Bowe, Director of B2B Sales, success isn’t measured by individual accomplishments. It’s measured by the people around you.

“The success starts with your employees. At the end of the day, they’re the ones that are actually doing the work.”

As for Knowles, the senior executive championing the effort, her steer to other organizations is this: Leadership isn’t developed in a single workshop.

It’s shaped over time, in conversations, in decisions and in the opportunities leaders create for others.

And over the next four nights, we’ll introduce you to more of the people discovering that leadership isn’t simply about preparing for the next job, but about preparing to make a lasting difference.
