ZAMBIA – Zambian President Hakainde Hichilema has been declared the winner of a contentious election, securing about 60% of the vote despite violence and disruptions at polling stations.

Vote counting was temporarily suspended due to violence, and opposition officials were arrested during a raid that resulted in gunfire.

Hichilema’s main opponent, Brian Mundubile, received approximately 38% of the vote, according to the Electoral Commission.

Zambia, with a population of 22 million, is a major copper producer and has become a focus of Chinese investment due to its vast reserves of the critical mineral.

The announcement of the results comes after days of rising tensions since last Thursday’s election.
