UNITED STATES – The U.S. and Canada are racing against the clock to reach an agreement on tariffs before a midnight deadline this Wednesday, set by President Donald Trump.

If no deal is reached, Trump has threatened to implement a 50% tariff on $20 billion worth of Canadian goods, including items as diverse as hockey sticks and tongue depressors.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney confirmed the intensity of the talks, stating, “This is not the time to talk about negotiations in public.” Carney and Trump discussed the matter over the phone on Monday, highlighting the urgency ahead of Wednesday’s deadline.

Despite historical trade tensions, including disputes over softwood lumber and dairy access, both nations have maintained strong relations.

Canadian soldiers have fought alongside Americans in conflicts like Afghanistan, and every day, more than 330,000 people and $2 billion in goods cross the undefended 5,000-mile U.S.-Canada border.
