Federal Investigators Probe Amazon Cargo Jet’s Fiery Runway Crash That Killed 5 in Miami

MIAMI, UNITED STATES – Federal investigators are examining whether an Amazon cargo jet landed too far down the runway before crashing at Miami International Airport, killing at least five people.

Images appear to show the Boeing 767 remaining airborne well down the runway before touching down.

Investigators will determine where it landed and why the pilots did not abort the approach if they were beyond the normal touchdown zone.

Investigators are also examining the aircraft’s speed, braking, mechanical condition, maintenance history, and weather and wind conditions.

Experts say a possible tailwind may have contributed to the plane traveling farther down the runway.

The jet overran the runway around 2PM Sunday after arriving from San Juan, Puerto Rico, crossing a nearby roadway and striking vehicles.

Five people died, three were critically injured and two others suffered less serious injuries.

The 32-year-old Boeing 767 was operated by North Carolina- based 21 Air for Amazon Prime Air.

The crash closed two of Miami International’s four runways Monday, and continued to disrupt flights.

Amazon says it will cooperate with the investigation, and expressed condolences to the victims’ families.
