NASSAU, THE BAHAMAS – The Purdue Boilermakers took down the University of Houston Cougars in straight sets to win the first match of the tournament.

Purdue took the first set 25-18, but the Cougs wouldn’t go away easily. They won the 2nd set 25-22, and they had to dig deep (no pun intended) to put them away, winning the third set 29-27.

Addey Tindall led the boilermakers in kills with 22. Lameen Mambu had 13 as well.

The match was the first of the tournament, which will see Purdue, Houston, University of Kentucky, and Southern Methodist University take on each other to see who will come out on top.

Women’s volleyball is one of the fastest-growing NCAA varsity sports with Nebraska setting attendance records last year.

And it’s not every day that we get to see these elite athletes here on our shores.

Baseball

Coach Antoan Richardson and his Atlanta Braves played some bonus baseball last night, taking down the Philadelphia Phillies 6-5 in the 11th inning to further their division lead.

He-Seong Kim was the unlikely hero in this one. The South Korean infielder’s batting average hovered around .100 all year because of a finger surgery that shortened his season.

But down 5-4 in the 11th, he came in to pinch hit and drove in the game-tying run, and then he got on his horse and scored the walkoff run all the way from first base the very next at-bat on a Drake Baldwin double deep in the right-center gap.

Tomahawk chop, ballgame.

Jazz Chisholm is on the shelf because of a ligament strain in his thumb, so he didn’t play in his Yankees’ 6-4 win over their little brothers from Queens, the New York Mets, on the day that the city paused to remember the September 11th attacks.

Bahamian by marriage Cody Bellinger hit a home run and so did Ben Rice.

And BJ Murray struck out in his only at-bat of the Chicago Cubs’ 12-2 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates.

And down in the minors, 20-year-old Sebastian Walcott of the Texas Rangers Organization continues to treat the Texas league like his personal playground.

The 6’4″ shortstop went 3-6 with 3 singles, two runs, and two stolen bases to help his Frisco Roughriders whoop the Wichita Wind Surge 14-2.

He’s been locked in since he got back from injury in June, hitting .322 with a .990 ops and 10 home runs in only 36 games.
