NASSAU, THE BAHAMAS – An outpouring of grief, support and fond memories Friday night among the family and friends of Melvin Henfield, better known as DJ Fresh.
He was one of the 10 victims in the Independence Day crash in Andros.
The event, at the family home in Yamacraw Beach Drive, was a night of remembrance for the many touched by his musical legacy.

In the two months since that tragic crash, families have gathered again and again to honor and grieve for their loss.
Those who knew and loved Melvin “DJ Fresh” Henfield say his memory lives on through the stories of kindness, faith, and devotion he shared.
They described him as an energetic and charismatic musician .and a devoted father to his two daughters.
Above all, a man whose legacy will continue to inspire long after that tragic day.
At this most recent gathering, his loved ones carried custom-made face towels with DJ Fresh’s photo and name.
His oldest brother Andrew Coleby Jr. recalled fond memories.
“It was at the brass band parade over in Andros. And Melvin always used to tell me, right, Melvin always used to say, Andrew. Seeing that we on the road together, right. If there is one song that I would really love to play, is television love, right. Even though that was my favorite song. Melvin being the kind of musician and person he was. Melvin would always give you one of the best parades, to be honest with you. And Melvin and I, we played side by side.”
Coleby Jr. says the family is united in its faith and that along with the support of spiritual leaders, is helping them get through this difficult time.
“But now, at this point. It is through, the grace, mercy, strength, and prayers o, my spiritual father and my adopted father, Bishop G Elton Major, and his family, that we all trying our best to hold things together.”
Next was family friend Andrew Coleby, who recalled how the crash shook the Regatta community the day it happened.
He says he felt compelled to be there in support.
Melvin’s personality and musical talent leaving an unforgettable mark on everyone he met.
“That, did something to me. That did something to the whole regatta. The whole regatta was dampened because of that, that plane crash. Especially when the homeboys were coming home to perform. Better known as DJ Fresh. You know what I mean. That’s his name, DJ Fresh. It bothered me. I had to be here tonight. His personality, he has a personality of his world. If you meet Mel, if you ever meet Melvin, he is somebody that, I never see him mad. I never saw Melvin Mad. As long as I knew him. I never saw him mad. And his talent, I mean, he plays from any instrument that he put in his hands.
Friends and family say they will continue to lean on one another for strength and comfort during this time of grief, and they will cherish the memories of Melvin “DJ Fresh” Henfield.
