ORG: Equipping Voters With the Right Tools and Information

NASSAU, BAHAMAS – Thousands of Bahamians cast their ballots in this year’s general election, each with their own reasons for supporting a particular party or candidate.

However, the Organization for Responsible Governance (ORG) says voter engagement shouldn’t begin or end on Election Day.

They say the organization has long worked to educate Bahamians about government, policy and civic engagement.

Now they are launching a new initiative called, Beyond The Polls.

Senior Outreach Manager Ari Wells says the program builds on the organization’s Pathway to the Polls initiative.

“The immediate feedback that we got from our Pathway to The Polls initiative was that more people wanted more opportunities to be involved, and so we created this program called Beyond the Polls because we realize the governance doesn’t start or stop at one election, and I think that when we talk about apathy specifically among you, we have to address [it]…”

As for one of the challenges among voters, Wells says that “there’s a lack of trust that we have in our public institutions and I think in order for us to rebuild that trust there’s some foundational work that needs to be done and that includes building the capacity for people to understand what is happening around them…”
