Man Sentenced to Time-Served for Child Molestation

NASSAU, BAHAMAS – A child molester has been sentenced to time-served for the three years, nine months and two days he has already spent in custody.

Reginald Sweeting, 62, pleaded guilty to unlawful sexual intercourse in relation to the 12-year-old case, sparing his victim the need to relive the traumatic incident in court.

On January 21, 2010, the then 10-year-old girl went to Sweeting’s home to collect an item for her grandmother.

The child met his door open and entered the home. Prosecutors say once inside, Sweeting, then 50, grabbed the girl from behind, pushed her into a bedroom and raped her.

In keeping with a plea agreement, Senior Justice Bernard Turner sentenced Sweeting to a term equal to the time he had spent in custody before he was released on bail.

The judge also ordered Sweeting to pay the victim $5,000 in compensation by December 5, 2022 to avoid serving a year in custody.

Sweeting must also keep the peace to be of good behavior for two years. If he commits any offense during that period, Sweeting will be liable to a sentence of one year in prison.
