HAITI – The growing violence and crime in Haiti hampers humanitarian aid, according to a UN spokesman.

Nationwide protests sparked by doubling petrol prices, adds to the economic, political, security and now humanitarian crises there.

Haiti’s problems escalated last July after President Jovenel Moeese was assassinated and an earthquake struck a month later.

Heavily armed violent gangs have taken over large areas of Port Au Prince with
regular kidnappings.

A warehouse used by the UN World Food Programme was recently looted and set on fire.

The UN says it’s ready to assist people in need across the country, whether due to the unrest or bad weather recently.

But funding shortfalls and difficulties with logistics will likely make it difficult in the coming days.
