NASSAU, BAHAMAS – A 34-year-old Jamaican woman has been sentenced to 42 years in prison for the murder of her girlfriend last February.

Nadisha Beckford did not show any emotion as Justice Renae McKay handed down the sentence on Tuesday.

Beckford stabbed Lakeisha Mackey and slit her throat during a confrontation in the parking lot of the Mayfair Hotel on February 20, 2021.

Despite medical intervention, Mackey died in hospital on February 22, 2021.

Beckford didn’t deny stabbing Mackey, but she claimed that she was acting in self defense.

The jury rejected this and unanimously convicted her of murder on June 29, 2022.

Her lawyer, public defender Dorsey McPhee, said she will appeal both the conviction and sentence.
