NASSAU, BAHAMAS – On this day in Bahamian history, former Governor General Arthur Dion Hanna was born in Acklins in 1928.

Hanna entered politics in the late 1950s under the newly formed Progressive Liberal Party and was elected to the House of Assembly in 1960 and served as a Member of Parliament until 1992.

He holds the distinction of being the longest serving deputy prime minister in Bahamian history.

He served as Governor General from February 1, 2006 – April 14, 2011. Hanna died on August 3, 2021. He was 93.

On this day in 2012, Miracle Shekera Joseph, who was born with a conjoined parasitic twin, was released from the neonatal intensive care unit of Princess Margaret Hospital after two months.

The surgery to separate the two was performed in January that year and was the first of its kind in The Bahamas.

At the time of her release, miracle was in good health as doctors said she would likely live a normal life.
