NASSAU, BAHAMAS – A former attorney general is calling on the government to pass the bill on citizenship, which will give women and men the equal rights to pass on Bahamian citizenship.

Allyson Maynard Gibson told reporters a bill has already been drafted, which will allow give women the right to pass citizenship on to their spouses and their children, as well as give single Bahamian men the right to pass citizenship on to their children in certain circumstances.

“It’s a no-brainer,” Maynard Gibson said. “Get it done.”

Maynard Gibson advocated for gender equality in 2016 as the Bahamian people voted on the issues in a referendum. The vote on Equal Nationality Rights was rejected by the Bahamian people.
