NASSAU, BAHAMAS – The Ministry of Works and Utilities is responsible for the maintenance of countless government buildings and roads but did you know they also maintain cemeteries?

Senior Civil Engineer in The Ministry Of Works, Francis Clarke, says the ministry is responsible for ensuring that the final resting place of thousands of residents is well maintained.

The ministry works with private contractors to ensure all public cemeteries are maintained on a monthly basis.

However, there are cases when a cemetery will be in need of a major facelift, as was the case recently with the Western Cemetery.

There are 13 cemeteries currently being maintained by the Ministry of Works.

According to Clarke, all cemeteries must be gated and the department also oversees the upkeep of all gates and railings.
