NASSAU, BAHAMAS – Family Island local government councils can breathe a sigh of relief as they’ll be getting more money during the upcoming fiscal year.

Minister of Agriculture, Family Island Affairs and Local Government Clay Sweeting making the announcement in parliament this morning as he contributed to the 2023/2024 Budget Debate.

He says they’ll see a 10% increase in their operational budget expenses.

Sweeting says having sat in the chair as a local government practitioner, he knows firsthand the challenges that townships face.

Currently, the department of local government has 356 staffers and 512 local government practitioners throughout the 33 family island districts.
