NASSAU, BAHAMAS – A Royal Bahamas Defence Force Officer accused of rape has been freed on $9,900 emergency bail.

Prosecutors allege Lieutenant Valdez Lopez, 41, sexually assaulted a 28-year-old woman on July 11.

Lopez was not required to enter a plea to the charge when he appeared before Acting Chief Magistrate Roberto Reckley.

Lopez returns to court on October 19 to receive voluntary bill of indictment papers.

As a condition of bail, he has to surrender his travel documents and is forbidden from coming within 100 feet of his alleged victim.
