NASSAU, BAHAMAS – The Bahamas is one step closer to legalizing cannabis for specific purposes, as the government is welcoming public consultation on the proposed legislation.

Attorney General Ryan Pinder K.C. revealing as much Thursday noting that the legalization of the cannabis industry can open up significant new agricultural business opportunities for Bahamians.

The legislation also allows for doctors to prescribe cannabis for medicinal use.

And not to be left out are those who wish to use marijuana as a part of their beliefs.

The proposed legislation also allows for the use of cannabis as a sacrament by followers of the Rastafarian faith, but they’ll need a special license.

But the AG says there will still be consequences for the use of cannabis outside the scope of the legislation.

The proposed bill also seeks to establish a Bahamas Cannabis Authority that will be responsible for regulating the industry.
