ABACO, BAHAMAS – A freak accident at sea Friday night leaving one man dead and nine others in hospital in the capital.

Community leader, Pastor Silbert Mills says he got a call around 8:30 pm alerting him to the incident. Once on the scene, he met a host of other volunteers and EMS personnel from the local clinic.

The police report says the 28-year-old boat operator was transporting 19 passengers from Montage Cay to Marsh Harbour onboard a white 27ft. 250 horsepower, Yamaha single engine when he struck a rock. 

According to Mills, the boat was mere seconds away from their destination when they hit the rock. 

Police confirmed that the passengers were working over on Montage Cay. 

All passengers were taken to the local clinic for medical attention but it was determined that nine needed additional medical care.

Those nine were airlifted to New Providence. 

The unresponsive man was declared dead by the district medical doctor.
