GRAND BAHAMA, BAHAMAS – Grace Pinder is a Pinder’s Point resident and local government representative, talking about fumes residents say are coming from the Buckeye facility.

She says the issue has been happening sporadically for decades.

In 2016, the Pan American Health Organization was called in to assess if there were increased health risk factors to the residents surrounding Grand Bahama’s industrial areas.

At the time, residents of pinder’s point were told their cancer rate was no different than the rest of the island.

Many, like Pinder’s Point resident Lawna Knowles, were not satisfied with the findings.

Grace Pinder says it’s time for the voted representatives to come in and hear the community, calling for a town hall meeting on the issue.

Resident Tanya Allen says she’s made multiple attempts to reach government officials.

Friday morning, Buckeye partners released a statement on the issue, saying that the spread of odor has been worsened by local wind conditions adding that they are actively monitoring vapor concentrations and are “not aware of any levels above acceptable safe limits at this time.”
