School Zones Are Sacred

NASSAU, BAHAMAS – The Baha Mar Resort Foundation donated $200,000 towards the Calvin Morely Safe School Zone initiative.

The initiative is aimed at creating safer environments for the thousands of students that cross the street to and from schools each day.

Education Minister Glenys Hanna-Martin says Morely and his family were her constituents.

She adds school zones are sacred, adding they should not be the scene of traffic accidents. 

Officials say over the years there have been multiple instances of students being struck on their way to and from school.

The initiative was named after 13-year-old Calvin Morley who tragically killed in December 2012 while attempting to cross the street.

His aunt, Charmaine Morely says the family is grateful and is still dealing with the pain of the loss. She had this to say to motorists.

Baha Mar Senior Vice President at Baha Mar Robert ‘Sandy’ Sands was also on hand for the initiative.

Schools included in the initiative are Martin Town Primary School, Yellow Elder Primary, Columbus Primary, E.P. Roberts Primary, Stephen Dillet Primary and Woodcock Primary Schools. 

The system can be set to various flashing patterns and will activate when pushed. This allows students to cross safely.

It will also deactivate after 60 seconds of activity.
