NASSAU, BAHAMAS – President of The Bahamas Christian Council Bishop Delton Fernander described Monday’s meeting with the prime minister and senior police officers as long overdue, highlighting their aggressive efforts to tackle the ongoing crime crisis.

One of the bishop’s key takeaways was government’s willingness to collaborate with the church.

The bishop was among those who heard from Police Commissioner Clayton Fernander who shared crime statistics and strategies to a diverse audience, including government officials, religious leaders, and the media with Prime Minister Philip Davis emphasizing investments in crime-fighting technology, such as improved ankle bracelet monitoring for suspects out on bail.

Filled with optimism about government’s direction, Bishop Fernander says the Christian Council is pleased with the progress.

And with the recent rise in murder numbers, reaching double digits so early into the year, questions have arisen about the church’s role. Some asking if it’s doing enough.

Bishop Fernander says he believes there’s a misconception.
