HAITI – The situation in Haiti is worsening and the island nation is now without a prime minister after he resigned following mounting pressure.

The move comes following a meeting with several CARICOM countries in Jamaica. The question many are now asking is what’s next for that nation? 

I spoke with a Haitian teacher and translator who once worked with the Bahamian Embassy in Haiti. She gave an in-depth view of what’s happening on the ground.

In just a few words, we hear the grim reality of some citizens living in Haiti. 

She was born in Haiti and has been living there her entire life. As the violence escalates there, she says the situation has become terrifying.

Now with the recent resignation of former Prime Minister Ariel Henry, the country is left without a leader. The move, this resident says she doesn’t believe will change much for that island.

There’s currently a 6pm curfew in Haiti. She says safety is a major concern, especially for politicians. 

She’s in the process of moving as she lives near a major gang.

And as it stands now most schools and banks are closed in her community due to the growing violence. The hospitals are also on the brink of collapse.

And there’s not much work at this time.

I asked her how do people survive if there is no work?

She says there’s been talks on the ground to give amnesty to the criminals which many she says agree with.

And with CARICOM nations preparing to step in to assist Haiti, she believes it would bring some sort of peace.
