PM Promises Lower Power Bills In July
NASSAU, BAHAMAS – Prime Minister Philip Davis has promised that consumers will see savings in energy bills in July, despite not seeing full benefit from the recently announced plan for another two years.
NASSAU, BAHAMAS – Prime Minister Philip Davis has promised that consumers will see savings in energy bills in July, despite not seeing full benefit from the recently announced plan for another two years.
The prime minister outlined three options to reform energy in The Bahamas and reasons the decision made was the best option.
Davis made the announcement as he was wrapping up the 2024/2025 Budget Debate in the parliament.
Last week, the government revealed a comprehensive energy reform plan that included utility-scale solar power for the Family Islands and an expansion of solar projects in New Providence.
It will also modernize Bahamas Power and Light’s transmission and distribution systems.
Davis says officials found the average home only consumes 655 kilowatts per hour monthly.
The prime minister also outlined the grim state of the power company. BPL has a $1 billion debt and age-old equipment that is constantly in need of repairs and making matters worse is, it’s difficult to find parts for the engines.
Davis also outlined that this will eventually impact economic growth.
