GRAND BAHAMA, BAHAMAS – Environmentalists in Grand Bahama are up in arms tonight over what they say is the destruction of healthy mangroves at an environmental park. They are calling on those responsible to stop as they say mangroves assist heavily during the time of a storm.

It was this scene in Grand Bahama this morning that left some environmentalists heartbroken: bulldozers clearing dozens of mangroves near Queens Highway and Peel Street. Capt. Daniel Murray claims the area was once corporate land for learning and a spot for eco-tourism that had mangroves up to twenty feet tall.

While he’s not sure who’s responsible for clearing the land, Murray says there’s a lot Bahamians should’ve learned from Hurricane Dorian. He also maintains the mangroves are an asset to the island. Murray shares that he is now active in a number of environmental organizations and is asking the powers that be this question: Are we just going ahead without learning from Dorian?

Environmentalists and owner of Earth Care, Gail Woon, also weighed in on the matter, claiming she reached out to the relevant authorities and expressed her concerns with the project. She says the area was also a nature trail and hopes that the bulldozing stops.
