Speedy Steevie Wins 400M In Hungary

HUNGARY – Steven Gardiner is back on the World Athletics circuit with the latest stop on the Continental Gold Tour.

Gardiner continued his undefeated 400m run this season with a win at the Istvan Gyulai Memorial in Szekesfehervar, Hungary.

He finished ahead of the field in 44.50 seconds. Jamaica’s Sean Bailey was second in 44.64 seconds and South Africa’s Lythe Pillay was third in 45.24 seconds.

Newly crowned Bahamian national champion Wendell Miller was sixth in 46.19 seconds.

Gardiner’s time was his second fastest 400m of the season, trailing only his 44.39 seconds ran back in may in the early stages of the tour in Ostrava, the Czech Republic.

The continental tour concludes following the Olympics, September 8 in Zagreb, Croatia.

Bahamian teams are off to impressive starts on the diamond at the bath Ruth Caribbean Region Invitational.

The Bahamas has two teams in the 12u division, hosted at the Baillou Hills Sports Complex, and one team in the 16u division, hosted at the Andre Rodgers National Stadium.

The 12u division also features teams from Aruba, Puerto Rico, Cayman Islands and Jamaica. 

On day two, the 12u squad got things underway with a dominant 28-0 win over Jamaica. They also had a 13-1 win over freedom farm and a 4-2 win over Puerto Rico to open competition.

The Freedom Farm team also had a 10-1 win over the Cayman Islands, but lost 1-0 to Puerto Rico on day two.

The winner of that division will book their ticket to Branson, Missouri for their spot in the Cal Ripken Major70 World Series hosted at Ballparks of America. 

The 16u division features teams from  Belize, Cayman Islands, Puerto Rico, MJBL USA, MJBL Vision, USA South and Venezuela.

Team Bahamas opened with a 14-3 win over the Cayman Islands followed by a 7-3 loss to MJBL Vision.

The tournament concludes on Wednesday.

In the 12u division Team Bahamas will face the Cayman Islands at 9am, with the medal round beginning at 3pm.

In the 16u division, pool play begins at 9am, with the medal rounds at 6pm.

Boxing

Bahamian pro boxer Carl Hield is now the WBA Fedecaribe Super Welter Champion.

Hield defeated Yorby Mendoza at boxing night in Cartagena, Colombia via a seventh round knockout to claim his first professional title.

He remains undefeated as a pro and improved to 7-0.

Hield made the transition to pro boxing in 2023 and has fought all of his pro bouts thus far in colombia.

His focus now shifts to the WBA Continental Title.

The former Commonwealth Games bronze medallist said he ultimately looks forward to one day defending an international title at home in The Bahamas.
