NASSAU, BAHAMAS – While some of us reported to work today, for thousands of Bahamians, today was a welcomed day off in celebration of the event nearly 200 years ago, which made us free. So how exactly did you spend your holiday? Our Joshua Williams tries to guess what you may have done today.

Emancipation Day, the day we recognise and celebrate the abolition of slavery in The Bahamas. 190 years we still celebrate but how?

The majority of Bahamians trek to the beach, as it’s the last holiday of the summer and normally a great day for outdoors. And the activities range from swimming, to water sports like a banana boat or jetski riding.

Water sports operators like the ones on Goodmans Bay appreciate the business.

Or maybe you love the water but don’t necessarily want to get wet. There is also the option of a boat tour.

For Bahamians, food is never far from our celebrations – no matter the holiday. There are a variety of holiday food events we gather around.

And in the spirit of emancipation, perhaps something native.
A local fish fry, or a favorite local restaurant or one of many spots recommended by our entertainment reporter.

If you’re a fan of regattas, then you probably just wrapped up activities in Rolleville, Exuma. It’s a staple of the August Monday holiday weekend.

For our outdoor lovers, the national parks provide a great way to get up close with the natural environment with walking trails, ponds and lagoons.

Or perhaps it was simply a leisurely drive along the coast of the island you call home.

Whatever it is that you did, the aim should’ve been an emancipation holiday that’s left you with refreshed and rejuvenated.
