Government Shelter Security Claims They Have Not Been Paid In Weeks

NASSAU, BAHAMAS – Security workers contracted to keep the premises safe at the Poinciana Inn are threatening to withdraw their services due non-payment and other contractural issues.

Their attorney, Ben McKinney showed up at the shelter on Wednesday. He alleges they were being asked to work above and beyond their duties.

What’s worse he claims, is the security officers have not been paid for the month of October.

I spoke to Shelter Administrator Dawn Darling who refuted McKinney’s claims.

“We’ve never asked them to do anything outside of the scope of their jobs,” she said. “They volunteer to help residents of we’ve asked them to assist us in maybe lifting a mattress or something like that and they’ve complied. It is always been that way and now because they’re issues unrelated to the shelter they’re now bringing that forward.”

When it comes to non-payment, Assistant Director with responsibility for Temporary Shelters and Community Support Services Division Cherely Kelly says there’s a valid reason for that.

“As soon as the documents are provided that is required from our department and the Bahamas government, then the security coMpany will receive payment,” she said.
