HAITI – More than 100 gang members have been killed in Haiti in a three day period, as armed gangs have stepped up attacks and attempted last Tuesday to invade one of the capital’s upscale neighbourhoods, Pétion-Ville.

The National Human Rights Defense Network says most of the deaths happened in areas like Canapé Verte and near the Oasis Hotel, with some gang members killed by police and others by residents defending themselves.

Vigilante groups, known as “Bwa Kale,” are on the rise and sometimes with police backing.

Meanwhile, the World Health Organization is sounding the alarm over how the violence is crippling healthcare and worsening the country’s food crisis.
