NASSAU, BAHAMAS – Fredrick Major is the father of Azario Major, who was shot and killed on January 26th, 2021, during a police-involved shooting. Yesterday, he was among several family members of men killed by officers who attended the Coroner’s Court as arrest warrants were issued for three policemen after they failed to appear in court.
While 11 policemen, whom jurors found unlawfully killed suspects during police-involved shootings, did show up, they were ordered to return to court on September 25.
Standing in front of a cross with a picture of his son, just feet away from where Azario died, Major shared that his family was encouraged by the recent developments in court.

“It is a sign of relief to see that the coroner’s court, Madam Turnquest, was bold enough and courageous enough to do what is justifiably done in this country according to the law.”
Yesterday, National Security Minister Wayne Munroe urged residents not to rush to judgment and to allow due process to take place. However, the grieving father had a different view.

“He was confused. He was confused in saying that, in pointing out the law.”
Since Azario’s death, the family has received overwhelming support. Fredrick Major shared that being at the spot where his son was killed brings back a flood of memories.

“It’s very emotional. I saw a video of my son yesterday with one of his friends, and I just broke down in tears to see him in such a joyful mood and to see him so happy. To see him as I know him to be—he was never known to be in gangs, he was never known to be a violent person.”
As the legal process unfolds, Fredrick Major believes there is still a long way to go in the fight for justice.

“We have a long way to go. The doors have been opened for the police to be charged, yes, but the battle has only just begun.”
