NASSAU, BAHAMAS – What is being described as an academic forum sparking backlash among the community, chief of them the Bahamas Christian Council.

Its president, Bishop Delton Fernander crusaded on Sunday against the University of the Bahamas’ decision to support a forum focusing on the struggles black Bahamians have faced over the years inclusive of the LGBTQ plus community.

Fernander says the university should not support such matters.

This position prompted the university to release a statement saying forums like the one being held are a part of the school’s national development mandate where people with differing views engage in civil discourse to better understand different viewpoints.

President of the Union of Tertiary Educators in The Bahamas and Professor at UB Daniel Thompson agrees with this stance.

Fernander also shares his desire for different viewpoints in society to be present when discussing these matters. Thompson says sure, but with parameters.

A minister in the Christian faith for over 30 years now, Thompson is warning church members to avoid what he calls ” emotive reactions.
