PUETRO RICO – Team Bahamas was unable to overcome a tough first quarter, and ultimately fell to Puerto Rico 71-66 in the second game of the second window of the FIBA World Cup Qualifiers.
Kai Jones missed this window’s first game against Jamaica, but joined the roster Sunday night to finish with 19 points and 9 rebounds.
Franco Miller Jr. had 19 points, 8 rebounds, and 7 assists while Isaiah Mobley had 11 points and 7 rebounds.
Puerto Rico went on a 12-0 run in the first to take a 22-11 lead.
They lead by 9 at the half and 14 headed into the fourth.
Trailing by 11 with 3:30 left to play, The Bahamas went on a 13-2 run of their own.
Miller’s three made the score 69-66 with 52 seconds left to play, but the home team made free throws to seal it.
Podium Performances at Indoor Conference Champs
Bahamians turned in several impressive performances at their respective conference championships that got them all the way to the podium.
We get started in Conference USA and the freshman season of milestones for Liberty’s Tahj Brown continues.
Brown won the 60m hurdles in 7.70 seconds – a new PR and the second fastest time in program history.
In the Mid-American Conference, Andrew Styles of the Akron Zips won the most valuable performer award.
He was a double champion in both the 200m in 21.67 seconds and the 400m in 47.99 seconds.
In the WAC, Tarleton State’s Jalen Cadet was one of two athletes to share the most outstanding field performer award.
He took the long jump title with a mark of 7.72m, and was third in the high jump at 2.00m.
In the SEC, the Florida Gators’ Wanya McCoy finished second in the 200m in 20.32 seconds.
Denning Headlines Strong Showing at ILCA Midwinters
If everything breaks right – The Bahamas is on a path to having a record number of qualifiers for the upcoming Central American and Caribbean games.
Eliza Denning led the way for Team Bahamas at the 2026 ILCA Midwinters East Championship.
Competing in a 106-sailor ILCA 6 fleet, Denning finished as the top junior female and 9th overall in gold fleet.
She also qualified for the 2026 Central American and Caribbean games, pending official confirmation.
John Alexiou added a 30th-place finish in gold fleet, and in the silver fleet, Armaan Manwatkar was 63rd, while Callum Pritchard was 81st and Nash Cartwright 86th.
In the ILCA 7 division, Paul de Souza was 17th, Joshua Higgins was 20th and Norman Cartwright Jr. was 21st.
All three remain in contention, looking to build what could be the country’s largest ever delegation to the CAC games.
