MIRAMAR, FLORIDA – This is the inspiring story of a Bahamian woman who moved to Florida at a young age and is now running for local office in the city of Miramar.

She shares the overwhelming support she has received from the community, her journey and vision for the future.

Meet Avril Cherasard who is now a candidate for Miramar Commission seat number three.

Cherasard, whose maiden name is Mckenzie, was raised in New Providence and graduated with honors from Government High School.

Being determined, she moved to the United States on a full academic scholarship from Florida Memorial University, earned a graduate degree and built a career in public service.

Over the years Cherasard says she developed strong relationships with various nationalities and gained a deep understanding of the city’s needs, operations and policies.

With the election scheduled for Tuesday, March 11th, Cherasard is confident and excited.

She notes the love has been overwhelming from the community.

She also says many Bahamian women have shown immense support during her campaign.

And she left this powerful message to other young Bahamian women, saying, “The only person who can get you to lift a foot to move forward is yourself. You have to build that inner gumption and know who you are, because knowing who you are, nobody can ever tell you that you can’t accomplish what you put your mind to. I’m an immigrant. I came at 16. I knew then that it’s important to have community and have the right people around you.”
