NASSAU, BAHAMAS – A burglar who attacked a 78-year-old woman inside her home has been jailed for 11 years, less the two years and two months he spent on remand.

Charles Lightbourne, 51, entered his victim’s home through the bathroom window.

He attacked the woman and beat her about the body as she was about to retire to bed around 10:30pm on May 6, 2021.

Lightbourne was convicted of burglary and causing harm following a trial before Justice Renae McKay.

Since the incident, the now 80-year-old victim is too afraid to sleep in the room where the assault took place. She told a probation officer that she would only feel safe if Lightbourne were jailed for life.

Lightbourne faced a maximum of 20 years’ imprisonment for burglary.

After considering the facts of the case, Justice McKay imposed a sentence of 11 years for burglary and six years for causing harm.

The sentences will be served at the same time.

Lightbourne intends to appeal.
