CHILE – Chile’s birth rate has dropped to a historic low of 1.1 children per woman, the lowest in Latin America and among the lowest globally, raising red flags for local health experts and shifting societal norms.

In January 2025, the country saw just 12,827 births, a 9.8% drop from the previous year, according to the National Statistics Institute.

Experts point to delayed motherhood, rising costs, and a growing preference for pets over parenthood as key reasons for the decline. Health officials warn of serious consequences, with the over-65 population doubling in the next 30 years, while those under 15 have fallen from 30% to 18%.
