China Hits Back As U.S. Trade War Heats Up

CHINA – Beijing has struck back in the trade war with the United States.

Starting February 10, China says it will impose a 15% tariff on U.S. coal and liquefied natural gas, plus a 10% duty on crude oil, agricultural machinery, and large-engine cars.

The calculated move is seen to be far more selective than Trump’s blanket 10% tariff on all Chinese imports, and leaves room for negotiations.

With a call between the leaders scheduled later this week, Beijing is reportedly keeping the door open for a deal while using its proposed tariffs as leverage.

On Monday, the White House announced that tariffs for both Canada and Mexico had been put on hold, at least for now.
