NASSAU, BAHAMAS – Health officials have confirmed that the country has 16 cases of dengue fever.

Dengue, a viral infection that spreads from mosquitoes to people is transmitted to humans through the bites of infected female mosquitoes.

The infection that is more common in hot climates can cause some people to experience severe dengue that can become fatal.

Dengue isn’t new to The Bahamas as there was a significant outbreak in 2011.

Chief Medical Officer Dr. Pearl McMillan says there are four types of the dengue virus.

Some people may not experience any symptoms at all but as for the more common symptoms, a high fever, headache, pain behind the eyes, body aches, nausea and perhaps even a rash.

Symptoms can last for up to two weeks.

You can lower your risk of dengue by avoiding mosquito bites especially during the day.

Additionally, experts say you can protect yourself by wearing clothes that cover as much of your body as possible, mosquito nets, window screens, repellents, coils and vaporizers.
