MEXICO – Mexican navy rescue dog Frida, who rose to fame due to her missions during the 2017 quakes, died in retirement at the age of 13.

The Mexican navy says her death was caused by “ailments typical of her age”.

Known for her custom-made doggy goggles and boots, the yellow Labrador became a social media star after her search and rescue efforts in Mexico in the aftermath of the September 2017 quakes turned into a source of inspiration and pride for Mexicans.

In addition to her work in the September 2017 disaster, she also put her nose to work in other missions such as an earthquake in Haiti, Ecuador, southern Mexico, a landslide in Guatemala, and a Mexico City gas explosion.

She retired in 2019.

Frida spent her last years in the navy’s canine control sub-group, where she led a peaceful retirement.
