NASSAU, BAHAMAS – The 2026/2027 Budget Communication was delivered by Minister of Finance Michael Halkitis, who spent more than two hours outlining the government’s economic performance, and plans for the year ahead.

Some of the initiatives announced by Halkitis includes healthcare expansion, family island clinic upgrades, pension reform, property tax adjustments, and new incentives aimed at making homeownership more affordable.

However, Free National Movement Leader Michael Pintard says despite government’s claims of economic progress, many Bahamians are still feeling the pressure of high food prices, rising bills, and daily financial strain.

Pintard adds that it’s a budget built on concealment not transparency.

“ How they went about spending $200,000, having those funds leave the Ministry of Finance, and end up in Abaco in the form of vouchers, used to aid the political campaign.”

“ The past and present minister of housing still has not explained how they have been able to provide $40.2 million of the people’s money to the housing project…through the Carmichael Village Project.”

“This is a matter that we hope to discuss during the course of this budget. Have you been able to produce $10 million, $20 million, or $40 million worth of homes.?”

The opposition leader also questions government’s claims of fiscal surpluses, saying this:

“ You do not improve your finances by pretending the bills do not exist. A surplus built on unpaid obligation is not a sign of strength. It’s a sign of delay and deferral. Eventually, these bills come due.”

However, despite his criticisms, Pintard also gave some positive feedback.

“ Anything that makes the potential for home ownership, we applaud. So when we hear about a reduction V.A.T for first-time homeowners or a multi purpose building, a triplex or fourplex, and the V.A.T is again reduced for the first-time homeowner, any step in that direction is a good step.”
