GRAND BAHAMA, BAHAMAS -Member of Parliament for Central Grand Bahama Iram Lewis has worn many hats over the years, from Olympic athlete to architect and eventually, a political figure.

His transition to politics began in 2017 when he was elected as the MP for Central Grand Bahama under the Free National Movement. The party won all five seats on the island.

During his tenure, Lewis held key government positions, including Minister of Disaster Preparedness, Management and Reconstruction, as well as State Minister for Youth, Sports and Culture.

Despite the FNM’s loss in the 2021 General Elections, Lewis retained his seat, gaining strong support from his constituents in Central Grand Bahama.

But, his time in the FNM would not last forever.

On Wednesday, Lewis officially resigned from the FNM in Parliament, a decision many did not see coming.

During an interview, he revealed that he faced criticism from the FNM leadership after attending two protests, one outside the Office of the Prime Minister which included COI members and another at Grand Bahama Power Company.

Defending his actions, Lewis insisted his presence at the protests was about standing up for the people.

His departure sparking mixed reactions, with some applauding his decision and others questioning his leadership in Central Grand Bahama.

Lewis was greeted with a warm welcome by COI supporters upon his return to Grand Bahama outside Western Air’s terminal Thursday morning.

Following his announcement in Parliament, COI Leader Lincoln Bain expressed his support for Lewis’ move.
