GRAND BAHAMA , BAHAMAS- A popular STEM-based summer camp is back in Freeport this summer.

Beta Camp, which is being held at Sunland Baptist Academy, will host 100 students over the next few weeks, allowing them to dive into hands-on lessons in engineering, data science and more, turning ideas into futures.

Since 2014, Beta Camp has been showing young Bahamians just how much fun education can be.

The nonprofit’s STEM camp, which runs July 27 through August 1, gives children ages 11 to 16 a chance to explore science, technology, engineering and math this summer, making learning feel less like school and more like an adventure.

Chemical Engineering Instructor Ashley Russell says students need only an eager mind and a love for discovery.

“So if you have a child who is curious and they’re taking things apart around the house and they are tinkering with them, I’m sure that this camp will satisfy their curiosities. So I encourage you to sign them up. You can sign up on our website at wearebeta.co and fill out the form. Registration is open until July thirteenth.”

Russell also highlighted the importance of Beta Camp for the country’s future.

“Things around us are changing. They’ve been changing pretty quickly and still accelerating. And we believe that it’s necessary to have local Bahamians who are equipped to fill the spaces that are championing innovation and advancement throughout our country.”

Russell says beyond the classroom, the program has become a pipeline of possibility, and she believes that success is proof of how powerful curiosity can be when given the right space to grow.

“I believe that this program is quite impactful. We have a webinar series going, and we recently had a panel of past Beta alumni, and they spoke to the impact Beta has had on their lives in terms of finishing school and getting their degrees in engineering, as well as being working professionals now. So every year we have a Beta graduate, or a graduate who has attended our camp, and it fills us with joy. We’re pretty proud of the work that we’re doing.”

The camp runs from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily, and lunch is provided, making it ideal for parents with day jobs and students ready to jumpstart their future careers.
